Cherisse Alcantara (b.1986, Philippines) is an award-winning, emerging painter based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  She received her B.A. in Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013 and is the recipient of the Sussman Award in Painting.  Since then, her works have been exhibited in numerous juried and invitational shows in galleries including the Arc Gallery in San Francisco, Worth Ryder Gallery, Pence Gallery, Berkeley Art Center, and the Piedmont Center for the Arts.  She recently had her first solo exhibition at the Pence Gallery in Davis, California.

The paintings I have for this exhibition explore the everyday lives of minority women and men both individually or within a group in the context of contemporary urban life.  These paintings examine women in active roles; forming connections with each other in the process of finding their identities and navigating through life.  These are complex, unidealized and ordinary women, like many women I know.  Women who are not defined by narrow categories such as heroine or victim, attractive or plain, saint or sinner, to name a few.

What I seek are the ambiguities and the question marks in the imagery. It is the very act of painting with its slowness, labor and thinking through the paint, which allows for this reflection. Through suggestive narratives, I want to leave room for the viewer to enter into and engage with the painting.
