"As a result of a romanticized vision of the past, my paintings become spiritual destinations of love and domesticity that are inevitably unattainable. Each work stands as a testament to love, history and human experience, conceptually born from a lived American life along with a cultural heritage rooted in Indian classical music. They are my identity, my faith, and a reflection of my nature, moving forward while continuously looking backwards. Resulting from a psychic archeological process, the metaphysical veil on each piece serves as a mediating function between the "then" and "now," as the painted image recedes and arises reconstructed into visions of a dream-like quality of the world. The covering veil is a marker of time, a gritty representation of the present, and ultimately a residue, left by the repeated act of retrieval. "

I was inspired at an early age to be creative. Born in New Jersey to a musical Indian family, I began playing instruments around the house, learning by ear and watching my parents perform at concerts. My urge to compose music paralleled my desire to create visual environments. Producing drawings and paintings was a way to manifest and inhabit my visions to which music had played as an ongoing soundtrack. Both my music and art have been strongly influenced by my bi-cultural upbringing, the surrounding rural landscapes of my childhood and my nostalgic nature. In addition to an undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia, I obtained an MFA in Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2005, and I am currently a Visiting Lecturer in Painting at UC Berkeley. My current work explores my relationship with the past through processes that are ultimately about the attempt and result of repeatedly retrieving buried painted images.
