Juan Santiago is a working artist and lecturer in the Bay Area.  Primarily working in ceramics, he uses wheel throwing, hand building and slip casting methods to create experiential installations and sculptural works.

His work has developed under the tutelage and apprenticeship with Arthur Gonzales, Jim Melchert, Wayne Higby, the late Peter Voulkos, and Marilyn Levine.  His interests in varying approaches continue to inspire his unique display of “elemental” and modular parts to create abstracted dioramas of his most recent works.  Santiago has lectured, run workshops, attended residencies and exhibited in Berlin, Thailand, China and the U.S.  His work is collected nationally and internationally.  Santiago earned an MFA at The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and a BFA at California College of the Arts.  Santiago continues his art practice in Oakland, California.

Identity?
I am guided by following questions which influence form.  What form of my identity would I like others to see?, How much information am I willing to give?,  What is it about the color of my skin?

I look for resolve in my work by juxtaposing materials to support the porcelain object within an architectural space.  The obscuring process of porcelain figurines by way of additive and reductive techniques, give way for new interpretations of concealing and revealing identity.
